Black Owned CBD Brands

With the monetization of CBD and THC products, it's important to see people of color in spaces where they have been villainized and ridiculed for participation. With Juneteenth around the corner, three days to be exact, we take this opportunity to highlight three Black-Owned CBD companies invested in giving back and the overall wellness of culture and community.

Brown Girl Jane

Founded by Malaika Jones Kebede and her sister Nia Jones Alugbin, Brown Girl Jane was created under the desired guise of holistic options for healing and wellness after a sudden spinal injury. After much research, and their different experiences with the plant, they simply fell in love - they fell in love with not only the benefits of the plant, but the community of brown women they found surrounding CBD. Brown Girl Jane's CBD products are organically grown, plant-based, vegan and cruelty-free. With a large product line, they also offer on-site content and social content focused on wellness to help expand conversations about access and the creation of CBD in brown communities.

Holmes Organics

Holmes Organics, created by Cory Holmes, aims to help people cope with their everyday stressors, whether that be physical or mental. Through personal experience, he believes that CBD aids in stress relief and ease outside triggers that can affect your daily life. Holmes, speaks about growing up in the hood and always having to keep a lookout in their day to day activities. Being in a community riddled with gun violence was nothing new, but being the random target, years later, added to his childhood trauma. The effects of these events did not set in until adulthood so when the symptoms began to occur, he began to search for all-natural remedies to help with his recovery from anxiety and stress. He found that CBD offers the same benefits of THC without the high, enabling him to use the product anywhere when he needs to.

Undefined Beauty

With a beauty industry dedicated to Eurocentric features and attributes, we recognize the brand Undefined Beauty for putting melanated skin at the forefront of CBD product creation. Dorian Morris launched Undefined Beauty in 2018 with serums, oils and other treatments that are not only sustainable but evade the use of parabens, sulfates, silicones and other artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. With this brand, Morris also sought out to positively impact the women who have been formerly incarcerated through the criminalization of cannabis, by including them in her very first collection. The Undefined Collective, another Morris creation, is a brick and mortar located in Oakland, California, that features women, the LGBTQAI+ and other minority brands. With a dedicated practice to inclusion Morris is truly bridging the gap!

With plenty more brands to highlight we celebrate those who have paved a way for CBD brands to flourish in multiple communities, specifically those who have brown skin. As more companies become available in our communities we seek to educate and eradicate the negative stigmas behind the use of CBD products.
